The Bangladesh Premier League will kick off on the 5th of January 2023. Earlier, BCB announced the addition of another team for the next three seasons as the count moves to the usual 7. The BPL will feature 34 matches, including the double round-robin league stage, playoffs, and a final on February 16.BPL was announced in 2011 and the first season kicked off in 2012 with Dhaka Gladiators emerging victorious against Barisal Burners in the final.
Overall, 16 franchises with different names have been featured so far in the tournament. Comilla Victorians are the defending champions after they defeated Fortune Barishal in a nail-biter by 1 run. Over the eight seasons, the franchise has also won the championship the most number of times lifting the cup in 2015, 2019, and 2022.
Renowned players across the globe have featured in the league, and its fanbase continues to grow with each passing year. BPL Team: Comilla Victorians
Despite making their entry late in the league, they are still the most successful team in the league, having lifted the cup thrice. This year they finished at the second rank on the league table and went on to beat Fortune Barishal in the final. They had the services of international stars like Moeen Ali, Cameron Delport, Faf du Plessis, Sunil Narine, and other stars, along with elite local players like Mustafizur Rahman, Mominul Haque, and Litton Das.

BPL Team: Fortune Barishal
The veteran Shakib Al Hasan crafty led his side to the top of the table in the league stage in this year’s journey but unfortunately lost the final. He was awarded the Man of the series award for his brilliance both with the bat & ball. He was well supported by West Indian contingent Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Alzarri Joseph, and Sri Lankan Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka. BPL Team: Chattogram Challengers
The challengers accumulated the 3rd spot on the points table this year and made it to the playoffs. The side started off its BPL journey with the name of Chittagong Kings, later changed to Chittagong Vikings when the ownership changed. However, in the 2019/20 season, Akhtar Group acquired the sponsorship rights of Chittagong and named the team Chattogram Challengers. Their best performance came in the 2013 edition of the tournament, when they made it to the finals but lost to the Dhaka Gladiators. Although they do not possess big names in the squad, they certainly have the capacity to do wonders for the side and have shown glimpses of their talent in the last two seasons.

BPL Team: Khulna Tigers
The side earlier played by the names of Khulna Royal Bengals and Khulna Titans. The side’s name was changed to Khulna Tigers in 2019 after MindTree and Premier Bank Limited became the sponsors of the team. Their premium performance came in a similar year when the team managed to qualify for the final of the tournament. The little master, Mushfiqur Rahim, leads the side while Sikandar Raza and Thisara Perera are the main pillars of this group.

BPL Team: Minister group Dhaka
The Dhaka franchise has ruled the league since its inception in 2012. Having won the title three times and been runners-up on a couple of occasions, the side has done justice to representing the Capital City throughout the eight editions. The side started as Dhaka Gladiators and won the first two seasons of the tournament, but disbanded after corruption charges.
In 2015, they returned as Dhaka Dynamites and Dhaka Platoon in 2019. Apart from this season, the side has always managed to qualify for the knockout stage matches. BPL Team: Sylhet Sunrisers
They are facing challenges on two ends. One is to finalize a name, and the other, and most important, is to discover winning strategies. They only managed to qualify for the knockout only once, and that was way back in 2013. The on-and-off change of command at the helm and poor squad selection have been the major reasons for the side’s downfall. Although they enjoy the luxury of big names like Colin Ingram, and Lendl Simmons, drastic changes need to be made to turn their fortunes around.

The Rangpur Franchise did not feature in this year’s competition, but they’ll be back next year under the ownership of the Bashundhara Group.
